Sound masking for
better workplaces
Sound Masking for Performance Workspace
What is sound masking?
Sound masking introduces a carefully tuned background sound into a workplace. It makes conversations less intelligible at a distance, helping improve speech privacy and reduce distraction.
45dB Systems designs, supplies, installs and commissions systems for new fit-outs and existing offices throughout Australia.
So how does it work, and what are the benefits?
How does it work?
When a space is very quiet, conversations stand out. A calibrated masking sound reduces the contrast between speech and its surroundings, so distant conversations become less distinct.
Open-plan offices
Support nearby collaboration while reducing distracting speech for people working further away. Coverage and zoning are designed around the workplace layout.
Meeting rooms and enclosed offices
Sound masking forms part of a coordinated privacy design alongside walls, ceilings, doors and sound absorption. The receiving space’s ambient sound is considered with the required room performance.
Existing workplaces
A retrofit can address a quiet background and distracting conversations. We review access, ceiling construction and the acoustic problem before proposing a system.
New fit-outs
Include sound masking early so the acoustic consultant can coordinate ambient sound with partition and ceiling design.
Designed around your workplace
high performance acoustics for the workplace
Our commitment is to excellent sound. We work with you right from the moment you decide what you want to achieve from your space, through to ongoing calibration work to stay in step with your changing workforce.
Calibration
Automatic equalisation supports accurate frequency balance in each zone.
Adaptation
Optional sensors adjust masking levels as office activity changes.
Zoning
Settings are matched to open-plan areas, enclosed rooms and other uses.
One team from design to commissioning
Design
Share your floor plans, RCP and acoustic brief. We prepare a coordinated layout and zoning proposal.
Installation
We coordinate with the project team around ceiling access, services and the construction programme.
Commissioning
We calibrate the finished system and provide support as the workplace changes.
Common questions
Is sound masking the same as white noise?
A workplace masking system uses a shaped frequency spectrum and calibrated levels suited to the space.
Will it make the office louder?
It adds background sound. We set the level and frequency balance around the acoustic brief, privacy requirements and comfort.
Can it be installed in an existing office?
Often, yes. Ceiling access, room layout and installation arrangements determine the approach.
Does it replace walls and acoustic treatment?
Sound masking works alongside sound isolation and absorption. Room privacy is assessed using all three.
